One signee’s Tennessee career is over before it ever started.

Nashville, Tennessee, 4-star DT Brant Lawless has requested and has been granted a release from the university, according to VolQuest.com.

It was reported in early June that Lawless wouldn’t enroll at Tennessee this summer. The 6-foot-3, 285-pound prospect is said to be exploring other opportunities currently. According to VolQuest, Tennessee made every effort to keep Lawless in the class, and having already met academic requirements to enroll, he’s still looking elsewhere to play this fall.

As transition continues from the Butch Jones era to the Jeremy Pruitt era, some things are expected to go wrong. Lawless not enrolling would certainly qualify as one of those things, as he originally committed to Tennessee while Jones was still the head coach. Lawless is reportedly looking at North Carolina.

At 285 pounds, he certainly would have been a big addition along the Vols’ defensive front, but he very well could play against them at some point in his career.
