Bru McCoy explains his role as Tennessee's newest 'Cookie Monster'
Bru McCoy, otherwise known as the Cookie Monster in Knoxville, Tennessee.
McCoy, who has turned into one of the Vols’ top options at receiver after transferring from USC to start last season, joined Andy Staples and On3Sports this past week to discuss, among other things, his role as Tennessee’s newest Cookie Monster.
The name and role come from a campaign run by a local cookie shop in Knoxville, Moonshine Mountain Cookie Company. A few years ago the shop ran a deal with Tennessee football and star cornerback Alontae Taylor, allowing fans 2 free cookies for every interception Taylor snatched out of the air.
It was continued again last season with Cedric Tillman and now the baton has been handed to McCoy. If he catches 2 touchdowns in a game, that’s free cookies for Knoxville.
The Tennessee WR joined Staples Wednesday to discuss the promotion:

Away from his Cookie Monster role, McCoy is perhaps Tennessee’s most “reliable” receiver.
What stands out about McCoy is his brute strength and ability to catch everything that is near him. He’s not the fastest player in Josh Heupel’s offense, but he doesn’t have to be. That’s reserved for Dont’e Thornton and Squirrel White.
But if Tennessee needs 10 yards on 3rd down, expect a ball thrown McCoy’s way. He’s off to a good start to 2023, but Tennessee’s receivers in general are having difficulty adjusting to life without Hendon Hooker and Jalin Hyatt around to pick up some of the slack.
Tennessee’s got a big one this week as the Vols travel to Gainesville to take on the Florida Gators. The game is set for 7 p.m. ET and will be aired on ESPN.
