The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel made a big comparison between Tennessee and the 2019 LSU team.

In 2019, LSU captured a national championship and had one of the greatest seasons in program history. Heading into Week 10, Tennessee is approaching an undefeated season in 2022.

In an appearance on WJOX’s “The Matt McClearin Show,” Mandel revealed what he saw in Tennessee throughout the season. He was asked about the comparisons between Tennessee and LSU:

“I see a lot of similarities. When I say that, I am not saying Hendon Hooker is taking a team to the Super Bowl in a few years like Joe Burrow did, or that Tennessee’s receivers will be Justin Jefferson or Ja’Marr Chase in the NFL,” Mandel said. “Josh Heupel runs a system that at least to this point, no one in the SEC has been able to figure out.”

Mandel referenced the talent on Tennessee’s roster and how well Heupel has done with getting the most out of the team. Heupel is in his 2nd season at Tennessee and he has a chance to lead his program to the College Football Playoff.

Tennessee has a pivotal SEC East showdown against Georgia in Week 10. This game could decide the division’s representative in the SEC Championship Game in December.
