Charlotte AD shares latest on Week 1 game at Tennessee
With official announcements of conference-only schedules for the Big Ten and Pac-12 this fall, football fans everywhere are wondering about the status of their teams’ out-of-conference games.
Tennessee is scheduled to host the Charlotte 49ers in Week 1 (Sept. 5). On Sunday, Charlotte AD Mike Hill appeared on ESPN Radio, telling Peter Burns that he talked with UT’s administration after the Big Ten’s recent decision and the plan remains for the Vols and 49ers to play the season-opener as scheduled.
While that sounds encouraging, things have a way of changing quickly on the matters of scheduling. Alabama AD Greg Byrne was asked for comment Thursday after a report of the Pac-12 moving to a conference-only schedule. The Crimson Tide were scheduled to play USC. On Thursday, Byrne said, “Our current plan is to play the game.” On Friday, the Pac-12 officially announced a conference-only schedule, canceling the Alabama-USC game.
The 14 SEC athletic directors will reportedly meet Monday in Birmingham to discuss the 2020 fall sports schedule.
On @ESPNRadio with us, @CharlotteFTBL AD @rmikehill tells us that he has talked to @Vol_Football officials even after the Big 10’s decision of conference only games and that the plan is to still play their opener as scheduled.

I’m not sure, especially not knowing what October or November would bring, why you would want to waste a Sept 5 date on Charlotte instead of playing Florida, Kentucky or any other conference game. The only thing we’re going to know by the middle of August is that October and November are still far from guaranteed so clear out the patsies in September an start working on a new conference schedule. If you can’t play in September they’re not going to move the conference schedule back and play the patsies in October, but if you can play in September then you better make sure you can play as many conference games when you can.
Tennessee’s paying Charlotte $2 Million…Ouch ! To play in front of a sparse Neyland Stadium crowd of let’s say 25,000. Lost $$$
After their opening game last year, it may be better for UT if the 49ers stay home!
Ugarmy can you not come up with something new. You are a tired old broken record. A sad individual. Must suck to be you. In sorry you carry that burden.
have a feeling Charlotte wants to play this game more than UT does. a growing, new, sort of up-and-coming program will need the money this game brings and the exposure they will get, especially if they can remain competitive last time they played UT. UT doesn’t really need it but you bet Charlotte does
