Dylan Sampson snaps Tennessee single-season record with opening TD vs. UTEP
Dylan Sampson is having one of the best seasons from a running back in Tennessee history. The star put Tennessee on the board against UTEP in Week 13, scoring on a 14-yard scamper.
The score was Sampson’s 35th rushing TD at Tennessee, which ties him with James Stewart for the 2nd-most rushing TDs in Tennessee history. Sampson also set the Tennessee single-season record for total TDs and total points with the below touchdown rush.
Dylan Sampson just set Tennessee single-season records for total touchdowns (22) and points (132).

The star RB also tied Leonard Fournette for the 5th-most single-season rushing TDs in SEC history. Only Derrick Henry, Najee Harris, Tre Mason, and Tim Tebow have rushed for more TDs in a season in the SEC than Sampson.
Impressively, Sampson has gone over the 100-yard mark in all but one game this season. The RBs best game from a yardage perspective came against Mississippi State when Sampson finished with 149 yards. Sampson’s highest single-game TD total came against Kent State when he found the end zone 4 times.
While the RB is having another excellent game, the rest of the Tennessee team started off struggling. Against lowly UTEP, the Vols were unable to score a single point in the 1st quarter. Sampson got the team’s first points shortly after the 2nd quarter began.
Things are getting better for Tennessee, though. Halfway through the 2nd quarter, Nico Iamaleava found Squirrel White for a 9-yard TD to put the Vols up 14-0. With 7:33 to go, the Vols maintained a 14-0 lead.
