Former Tennessee running back Alvin Kamara was named the FedEx NFL Ground Player of the Week on Thursday for his Week 9 performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The New Orleans Saints rookie rushed for 68 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. He also racked up 84 receiving yards in the Saints’ dominant 30-10 victory.

Kamara has been a pleasant surprise in New Orleans this season, and has emerged as the team’s No. 2 back. He has 772 total yards this season between rushing, receiving and returning. Kamara has also scored for five touchdowns.

For the Volunteers last season, Kamara rushed for nearly 600 yards and nine touchdowns. He also added almost 400 receiving yards and amassed over 300 total yards in a double overtime loss at Texas A&M.

“The weekly FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week Awards are also a win for local communities,” a Saints press release stated. “Along with the player awards, FedEx is making a $2,000 donation in each of the winning players’ names that will go to the USO through FedEx Cares. The donation will be used to support USO programs that keep service members connected to family, home and country as they depart the military and find a new path in civilian life.”
