Former Tennessee punter Paxton Brooks is set to continue his professional career on in the XFL.

Brooks among the names that appeared on the list when it was announced Wednesday that a total of 22 players from a variety of backgrounds had signed a Letter of Intent. Brooks will join the DC Defenders, alongside fellow newly signed tight end Josh Falo (USC), defensive back Bentlee Sanders (Nevada) and placekicker Enrique Yenny Romero (Tecnologico de Monterrey).

The Volunteers product should give the defenders a boost on special teams after a successful college career at Rocky Top. During his senior year at Tennessee, he was selected as a second-team Academic All-American and he tallied 38 punts for 1,486 yards with an average of 39.1 yards.

He also had two punts that traveled for 50 or more yards and 11 attempts in which he pinned inside the 20. He averaged 58.7 yards per kickoff with 28 touchbacks. It will be interesting to watch how he is able to make use of this opportunity.

The XFL has resurged and folded multiple times, but one thing that rings true is that it has allowed several players a new chance to start or restart an NFL career they may otherwise have never been afforded.
