The Tennessee Volunteers were the preseason pick to win the SEC regular-season title. Obviously, that didn’t go according to plan.

The Vols have been incredibly inconsistent this season, particularly on the offensive end of the floor.

But, do they have what it takes to make a deep run in the SEC Tournament and March Madness? ESPN analyst Jay Bilas joined “The Paul Finebaum Show” on Tuesday to explain what Tennessee has to do to keep playing for a while to come (via 247Sports):

“Tennessee is athletic, they defend very well and very consistently,” Bilas said. “They don’t take nights off on the defensive end. But the problem, if you want to call it a problem, is they’re inconsistent on offense. There are some games where they shoot it really well and they put up points easily, and then there are other games where they really labor to score. That sort of offensive inconsistency is the kind of thing that gets you beat in the NCAA Tournament. And in the games I’ve watched this year of Tennessee, it’s been hard for them to string together multiple games against quality competition where they score efficiently, game-to-game. Now, they defend efficiently, but I’m not a believer that defense only wins championships or reaches Final Fours. You’ve got to score.”

Can the Vols follow Bilas’s advice? They have the talent for a Final Four run, but they haven’t shown the consistency all year long.
