Tennessee is likely going to be without one of its defensive leaders for the rest of the 2020 season.

On Monday, Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt announced that senior defensive lineman LaTrell Bumphus is unlikely to return from an injury he suffered while warming up prior to Saturday’s 24-13 loss to Arkansas.

“It’s unfortunate with LaTrell, during warmups, somebody fell on his leg. He’s probably going to miss the rest of the season. That’s unfortunate for him,” Pruitt told the media. “He’s probably out 4-6 weeks, so based off the season, that’s going to be it for this year.”

Bumphus had 14 tackles and a sack in four games for the Vols this season. He had a career-high five tackles against Georgia on Oct. 10, then recorded his lone sack of the year the following week against Kentucky.

Over his first three seasons at Tennessee, Bumphus played in 33 games. It’s possible that he’ll return to the Vols next season, as the NCAA granted all athletes an extra year of eligibility due to the uncertainty surrounding the 2020 season.

Tennessee will now have to move on without a key starter on its defensive line. The Vols will be looking to end their four-game losing streak this Saturday as they host No. 5 Texas A&M at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
