After back-to-back tough losses, Tennessee is looking to get back on track against SEC East rival Kentucky in Week 10 after a bye week.
The Vols fell to Ole Miss and Alabama the last two times out and were off this past Saturday. On Wednesday’s SEC teleconference, UT coach Josh Heupel was asked about his “head space” entering into his first Tennessee-Kentucky game.
“It’s the only game we get this week,” Heupel said on the call. “Our kids are preparing in a really good way. … For us, it’s the next challenge for us. They’re really good up front on both sides of the line of scrimmage. … We have to go up there and compete for 60 minutes and play smart football.”
While Saturday is Heupel’s first game in the rivalry, he has some familiarity with Mark Stoops. Heupel and Stoops worked together at Arizona in 2005.
“Defensive coordinator there, did a great job,” Heupel said of Stoops on the teleconference. “… Really good recruiter. I was there early in the process of building that program there. He did a good job.”
