Josh Heupel downplays importance of early Playoff rankings ahead of initial top 25
The College Football Playoff’s first official rankings come out on Tuesday, replacing the AP Rankings that have governed the top 25 until this point in the season.
These rankings give fans a good look at just what it is the Playoff committee values after the first 10 weeks of the season. But otherwise, it’s pointless – as Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel pointed out Monday.
When asked about the first CFP rankings Heupel said the following:
#Vols coach Josh Heupel on the first CFP rankings coming out Tuesday night: Does anybody remember the first rankings last season? Seriously, I’m asking. Does anyone remember? I don’t.

I hate to put Tennessee on blast, but they’re a perfect example for why you shouldn’t buy too much into these early rankings – though there is some added value with the playoff field at 12 instead of 4. In 2022, Tennessee was ranked No. 1 in the CFP’s initial poll but missed out on the playoff. Surely, there will be a team that ranks within the top 12 that misses this year, too.
For now, Tennessee is just looking to control what it can control heading into Week 11 against Mississippi State. The Vols are 7-1 on the year but have yet to really put it all together – they’ll need to do just that against Georgia on November 16. Win that game and it’ll be hard for the Vols to miss out on the Field of 12.
The Vols face off against Mississippi State in another night game this Saturday at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
