Josh Heupel and the Tennessee Volunteers pulled off an incredible victory on Saturday, taking down Alabama 52-49 in one of the best games of the year.

After Alabama’s Will Reichard missed a 50-yard field goal attempt in the final minute of the fourth quarter, Hendon Hooker and the Vols were able to use their 2 timeouts to run a couple of pass plays to set up their own kicker, Chase McGrath, for what became the game-winning field goal.

During an appearance on SEC This Morning on the SEC Network on Monday, Heupel explained the strategy for the final drive (via On3 Sports):

“Obviously situational football. Needed to have an opportunity to pick up a couple of chunk plays to give us a chance to get into field goal range. You don’t hit one of those chunk plays, obviously you’re going to try a desperation Hail Mary into the end zone,” Heupel said. “Things that we talk about, that we work during the course of the week. Our kids were prepared for it. Really good protection up front. We executed out on the perimeter.

“Two huge catches by Ramel Keyton and obviously a contested catch by Bru McCoy. Hendon [Hooker] did a great job of executing, reading it out and the last one, stepping into contact and throwing a strike. Our field goal unit went out there and Chase [McGrath] hits a big one to finish it off.”

Clearly, everything the Vols drew up worked on Saturday in that final drive. Heupel and the offense deserve a ton of credit for staying calm and making big plays.
