Josh Heupel explains why constant focus is required for teams to be great
Josh Heupel is determined to keep his team’s eyes on the prize.
Heupel has taken Tennessee football to incredible heights, and he’s hell bent on keeping his team focused on the task at hand — which just happens to be a similar situation as the task that awaited the Volunteers before they went on their bye in Week 5.
In Week 6, Heupel’s 4th-ranked team that’s off to a 4-0 start will be playing a primetime road game at Arkansas, with a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on ABC from Fayetteville.
In Week 4, Heupel’s crew also had a primetime road challenge, which it met with flying colors in a 25-15 victory at Oklahoma that wasn’t as close as the score indicated.
So, here the Vols are again, on the road, in primetime, against a tough SEC foe. Yes, ESPN’s matchup predictor gives Tennessee a healthy 82.2% chance to win at Arkansas. But don’t tell that to Heupel.
In Monday’s weekly press conference, Heupel talked about the parity in college football and how losing focus could ultimately mean losing a game.
“Look at some of the scores from last weekend around the country. You have to have your focus right here, right now every day,” said Heupel. “You have to work and improve every day. The margins are that fine.”

Heupel will attempt to keep his team focused for the next few weeks, with top-ranked Alabama coming to Knoxville on Oct. 19.
PAC 12 Volunqueers can’t focus so they are not elite. It’s embarrassing to the SEC. The Round Mound of Clown Town is a mid tier coach and can’t get players to focus. We will lose recruits because of this and we will continue to ALWAYS look up at Bama and UGA.
voltrainconductor,Are you conducting the train or pulling one.As some one wrote earlier, you need to look harder for a job.
The worst thing you can do is reply to this person. He (assumed) does the same thing in Bama and Dawg articles too.
He’s not a fan of the sport we love. He just likes to agitate anyone/everyone.
He’s the creepy guy you hear about in the national news from time-to-time.
You guys are low IQ, easily fooled, confused and seeing double. That guy is clowning you and he and I are enjoying it.
Lol this is the trailer troll Doug_In_Al
I am enjoying the Heckle and Jekyll Voltrainchoochooboy. Very refreshing and entertaining. Please continue. Thank you.
has huppie ever been a champion? i mean since he left college
Not yet (as head coach).
His first head coaching job was at UCF (3 years)
He’s now in year 4 at UT.
He took the head coaching job at UT during a complete dumpster fire (33 players entered the transfer portal). In his second year Tennessee finished 11-2.
In his third year he had Bazooka Joe as QB (good kid, but couldn’t find or hit his targets).
He has been building the roster and is starting to close the talent gap with Georgia and Alabama (ain’t there yet).
There is reason for optimism.
Everybody can be #1. Until they are not.
My Volunqueers can’t be #1 because we are not elite. Coach Smart and Coach Deboer are out recruiting us by a long shot so 1998 may be all we have to hold on to. We will lose recruits because of how great UGA & Bama are. Sad day to be a Volunqueer fan.
Have not been able to locate a great team Heupel has coached? Must be a Fairy Tale.
