Josh Heupel has loved what he’s seen from kicker Charles Campbell so far this season.

Campbell spent his first 4 seasons at Indiana before transferring to Tennessee for his final year of eligibility. Campbell is a Tennessee native and has been making his home-state fans very happy so far.

He’s made 15 of 17 of his field goals so far this year. On Saturday against Kentucky, he had a career game, notching 4 field goals, including a long of 49 yards. In total, he had 15 points for the Vols in their win over the Wildcats.

Heupel had high praise for Campbell during the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday.

“For Charles, the opportunity to come back to his home state and really play for a program he followed and loved as a young guy,” Heupel said. “It meant a lot to him and to his family and a lot of people who helped him in the beginning of his career. From the moment he got here, he integrated himself into the team in a really positive way, he’s extremely focused, he works extremely hard, on the field, it’s just his consistency all spring long, all training camp. He’s hitting the ball extremely consistent. He’s been very accurate from the beginning. At the end of the day, you never know until they’re in game day. He’s been everything that we hoped for and thought we were getting in him.”

Tennessee was searching for a veteran kicker after Chase McGrath’s final year last year, and the Vols got that in Campbell. He had continually proved himself for Tennessee and he’s looking to remain consistent the rest of the year.

The Vols are hoping for another big game from Campbell this weekend as they take on UConn in a homecoming game. Tennessee is gearing up for a tough November slate, and a dominant win over the Huskies would be a good start.
