When Josh Heupel and Tennessee take on Texas A&M on Saturday, it will be far from the first time the Vols’ head coach has faced the Aggies.

Heupel led Oklahoma to a big win over Texas A&M in 2000 on the way to an undefeated season and a national championship. At the time, Oklahoma was the No. 1 team in the country and Texas A&M was ranked N0. 23.

The Sooners came up with a big win against then-Big 12 opponent Texas A&M and Heupel logged 263 passing yards, a touchdown and a pair of interceptions in the 35-31 win.

“That was a huge road win for our football team that year,” Heupel said during the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday. “They were a good football team, really tough environment on that day, which typically is there. It was a football team that continued to believe, continued to compete. Somebody would make a play, there were a lot of guys that made a bunch of plays over the course of that day. I absolutely remember it. We talk with this football team being able to reset and play from play-to-play, really not paying attention to the scoreboard until that thing ticks zero. That’s a competitive mindset and attitude you got to have in this game.”

Now Heupel is hoping the Vols can have similar success as they take on the Aggies this weekend. Texas A&M comes into the week after losing to Alabama last week and the Aggies will be gunning for a signature win. Meanwhile, the Vols are fresh off of a bye week and looking to continue momentum heading into the backstretch of the season.
