Terry McAulay is a busy man in the fall, serving as the rules expert for NBC’s Notre Dame football broadcasts and during “Sunday Night Football”. He’ll be on hand to examine potential game-changing calls during Sunday’s broadcast of the game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts.

Even though Saturday’s game between Tennessee and Alabama wasn’t on NBC, McAulay had his own personal take on a hit on a Volunteers player that wasn’t called for targeting. During the 1st half, Vols QB Hendon Hooker appeared to suffer a helmet-to-helmet hit that ultimately went unreviewed. That, as you can imagine, upset Vols fans everywhere.

But what did McAulay think? He responded to a tweet that questioned the decision to not call the Alabama player for targeting.

“This was a foul for roughing the passer with targeting,” McAulay tweeted. “The defender launches and makes forcible contact to the head of a defenseless player. Replay should have stopped the game and created the foul.”

McAulay was one of the top referees in the NFL during his tenure — officiating 3 Super Bowls — and also was the head referee for the BCS National Championship Game in 1998 as part of a career in the college ranks. So it’s interesting to get his thoughts on a call like this.
