Through the first few weeks of the 2017 season, Tennessee RB John Kelly looked like he was going to have a huge year.

He was putting up incredible numbers as both a runner and a receiver, but as the year wore on, Kelly faded mightily, finishing only 15th in the conference in rushing yards.

That didn’t stop Kelly from forgoing his senior season and declaring for the 2018 NFL Draft, but he’ll face plenty of questions in the coming months. On Monday, NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock held a teleconference and said there’s plenty to like about Kelly, but called the ex-Vol out for a sluggish finish to the year (via KnoxNews.com):

“If you put the Florida tape on, you go, ‘Wow,’” Mayock said. “That was a good football game. You see contact balance, a burst and acceleration. His last three games, I don’t know if it was him, his offensive line, or a combination, but they just looked different.”

However, Kelly wasn’t as consistently good as he was during the Florida game, so what does Mayock make of where the former Vol will be drafted?

“Best case, third round, but I don’t really think that’s happening,” Mayock said. “I think he’s, best case, fourth round. Realistically, fourth- or fifth-round running back. I think if he runs well and catches the ball well at his pro day, that could really help him.”

A lot of eyes will be on Kelly at this week’s NFL Combine, where he can try to do his best Alvin Kamara impression. If he does, he could rise up several draft boards.
