Paul Finebaum on Butch Jones' job status: 'I wouldn't have let him get on the plane'
Everyone is officially on Butch Jones watch.
The end is certainly near for the Vols’ head coach following the 45-7 loss to Alabama, but it’s uncertain if Tennessee AD John Currie will elect to fire Jones during the season or wait a little longer.
Paul Finebaum and Booger McFarland can’t imagine the Vols letting this play out any further. The two hopped on SportsCenter Sunday morning to discuss Jones.
“It’s 8:17 a.m. and Butch Jones is still the football coach,” Finebaum said. “I can’t understand it. I wouldn’t have let him get on the plane last night. I can’t imagine this university to allow this to go on any longer.”
McFarland is in agreement with Finebaum.
“If you watch this Tennessee program, it’s a prideful program … What are they waiting on? Go ahead and put the man out of his misery.”
Will Jones make it to Saturday’s game against Kentucky?
All eyes are on Knoxville.
Is this really a better product than what Dooley left behind? I’m just not seeing it.
Hard to say….Dooley took them to what 1 bowl in his time, and lost many close games as well. I don’t think either coach can take Tenn to the championship level, 9-4 at the very best. Don’t have anything against Jones, except maybe for the catch phrases, but time for Tenn to look toward the future.
Butch has done a good job bringing them to this point. It is a better team than what Dooley left behind, but Butch has reached a plateau where is not able to take them any further. I commend him for what he has done, but it is time to move on. I sure hope they are shopping for a replacement so we can preserve the recruiting class.
@Flounder1 I agree…I feel bad for him, I think he has tried his best and came to Tenn with high hopes and good intentions. With that being said I think Finebomb needs to chill out, I don’t think you need to put him on a bus back to Knoxville, a little bit uncalled for.
I was told from a staff resource, TN AD is waiting on contracts to be signed before announcing anything. Im not entirely sure what this means. I assume it means legal matters.
I assume it means someone is messing with you.
They won’t replace him until his replacement is committed and locked in contract for the job. So however long that takes …
That’s not really how it works. Most coaches won’t talk to UT until they actually have an opening.
p.f., your name doesn’t deserve to be printed and your initials don’t warrant a capital letter. If you were sitting on a plane I sure would sit at the opposite end. How about we compare you to good journalists we all know and remember. I recently attended an exhibit of great journalism judged by the recognized experts in your profession, not a single work by you was there. If ‘anybody’ is holding the great SEC back from becoming the greater SEC, it’s you. Clean up your own sour-pus act. About two-thirds of the NCAA division 1 has done worse than TN under Jones (during the same time frame), the adult facts are that It might be a lot longer before anyone does better at TN than Dooley or Jones. Best of luck on this to TN fans. I recently ran into one at a roadhouse in north Missouri and this is exactly what he said “I don’t think Jones is doing that bad, and I think he has the best interests of the student-athletes in mind”
He is not reading this site you idiot….
You are probably one of the fools that calls in to Finebaum
Tell us the weather……
tries to but p.f. has caller id and knows phillis is way ahead of b.t.
Wolfman…. Your ignorance reflects in each of your posts…
wolfman, Paul Finebaum ( there, made you say it outloud in your mind) is no longer writing so he’s not a journalist.
But good luck to you and your favorite team.
You got me
Finebaum is an agitator. Tennessee
should keep Butch Jones. Tennessee is not exactly a premier program.
They can’t keep coaches. It is just a stop off point for coaches.
Finebaum needs to be B*tch slapped by Nick Saban. Saban embarrassed him in his last interview. Finebaum ca’t get over it.
Jones is not a bad guy and he has done a good job bringing Tennessee to this point, but he is not able to go any further. The players love him and he cares about the program, he just doesn’t have the skill set to take the team any further. He has hit that plateau where he is lost going forward. I wouldn’t mind keeping at the school, but in a position other than head football coach…
What a jerk Finebaum has become, he needs to stick with taking calls from the illiterate Alabama and Auburn fan base

Nice, you made an account to post the same thing multiple times.
Tennessee should of done to Jones what USC did to Kiffin. Leave his ass at the airport.
The problem is if Butch is fired now, the only coach on staff with head coaching experience is Brady Hoak and he is a dumpster fire walking. Suppose they did fire Butch now, promote Brady and he wins out, then there is pressure to keep Brady as head coach, kind of like what happened To LSU. Tennessee has a ton of talent in the next recruiting class, they need to be in a position to replace him immediately. Before they can fire Butch a replacement has to be there waiting to take over in order to keep the recruiting class intact. Butch has to stay till they have a replacement, so we have to grin and bear it!
