NASHVILLE — Joshua Dobbs capped his career in fitting fashion Friday, nearly pulling off another 300-yard/100-yard game in leading Tennessee to a 38-24 victory over Nebraska in the Music City Bowl.

Dobbs ran for three touchdowns and threw for another in his final game as a Volunteer. It was also his third consecutive bowl victory — and all three were against Big Ten teams.

Nebraska, playing without its starting quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. and leading receiver Jordan Westerkamp, pulled within seven before Dobbs sealed it with a 59-yard scoring strike to Josh Malone.

What I Liked: The Vols started with a plan to use all of their weapons on offense. Alvin Kamara got touches in the run game, Jauan Jennings ran out of the wildcat. Jason Croom, Josh Malone and Josh Smith each had multiple receptions.

Dobbs mixed in enough runs with deep passes as Tennessee put up more than 500 yards of total offense and topped 34 points for the fifth consecutive game.

Derek Barnett, who pressured Ryker Fyfe throughout, finally got a sack late in the fourth quarter. It was Barnett’s 33rd, breaking Reggie White’s Tennessee record.

What I Didn’t Like: Other than a Tyler Byrd fumble on a kickoff with 11:57 to play in the game, there was not too much to not like about Tennessee’s performance.

However, one area of concern was the secondary. Nebraska started attacking the Vol secondary late in the second quarter and produced an 80-yard drive in only three plays that was capped by a 38-yard reception, which came after a 33-yard completion.

Nebraska continued to attack the secondary in the second half. Brandon Reilly scored on a nine-yard reception, keeping the Cornhuskers alive late in the third quarter. Fyfe, making his third career start, finished with 243 yards pasing.

Who’s the Man: Josh Dobbs — again, and for the final time. He didn’t only make big plays, he made timely plays.

Dobbs did a good job in spreading the field by getting a number of individuals involved in the passing game. For the game, six Volunteer players reeled in a reception. Dobbs was 23-for-38 for 291 passing yards and rushed for 118 yards on 11 carries.
