Tennessee fans now even more upset with AD John Currie after failure to land Mike Gundy
The Tennessee coaching search is turning into more of a disaster with every passing day.
Despite having plenty of money to work with, AD John Currie has yet to be able to land a coach to replace Butch Jones.
At this point, the search is getting comical to everyone not rooting for the Vols, as it seems the school can’t do anything right.
On Tuesday night, after news broke that Gundy was staying put, Vol Nation took to Twitter to express their exasperation and direct even more anger at their embattled athletic director.
If Currie doesn’t hire a new head coach soon, he can expect plenty of tweets like the ones below coming his way in the near future:
If it’s any consolation, Mike Gundy probably doesn’t have any grounds to sue Tennessee.

We wanted you Gundy. Our crappy AD doesn't know what he's doing tho. Wish you the best while we sit here and wait while clueless athletic administrators try to find us a coach. https://t.co/WqmOvfTbnA

Sad to see what’s happening with Tennessee. I don’t blame Gundy for turning down 6 yr $42M to stay at his Alma mater where he’s so loved, but Tennessee SHOULD be one of the most coveted coaching jobs in the country, but its tarnished.#emptyneyland & protesting a coach didn’t help

So we offered Gundy the job before. He turned it down and we ended up with Butch. He turns us down again. We better not end up with crap again. It's time to go in house and rebuild our program. @coachtee17 @John_Currie @VolTwiitter

So since Gundy turned us down, what's the deal with TN airplane en route to Oklahoma? I'm sure it will get lost in the Bermuda Triangle now. Thanks a lot, John Currie

Gundy turns down #Tennessee offer. What a great job @John_Currie has done for the fans of this great school. Damn I’m pissed!!!!!!!! It’s time for long-life Tennessee people to take over!!!! @phillipfulmer take charge!

Just end it already @John_Currie. You're the highest paid AD in the SEC. Start acting like. Hire somebody and stop making UT look like fools. #vols

We are going to be the last @sec school to fill it’s HC opening when we were the second one to fire our coach! Come on @John_Currie do your job!! #Vols
— Stephen R. Bell (@StephenRBell) November 29, 2017
Tennessee’s perception is in bad shape. They’re getting turned down left and right. we just threw $7M in Gundy’s face and he said no. Bruh WHAT!? At this point, our saving grace is to hire a #Vols guy. Just call Tee Martin and hire his ass. I’m so embarrassed right now.

Go after Gundy. He’s a man!
Unless you’re the dumpster fire called #Tennessee. Mike wants no part of that.

If you don’t realize the problem at UT is Haslams and Currie, I can’t help you. That’s why we can’t get a good coach. #FireJohnCurrie #FireHaslams
— Volstorm (bad Vol fan) (@volstorm00) November 29, 2017
Will the Vols find a coach that the fans can get behind soon? With each passing day, that looks like it is getting more and more unlikely.
This is much more than a Currie problem. The UT fan base is more to blame imo. Protesting on campus and their little #emptyneyland campaign has made the task of getting a great head coach impossible. Who would want to go to a program that is in shambles, and the fan base looks like a mob of rabid idiots? The fans need to shut up and let the university do its job.
Dude, you have crazy people down there that poisons another school’s trees? Pot, meet the kettle.
At least they do it to other schools, not to themselves. I love the fire Currie and Haslam lunacy. Who is going to be dumb enough to take those jobs? Same moron fan base, without the millions in buyouts when you’re fired.
“When I read “…like a mob of rabid idiots? ” I Think I about peed my pants. That was funny.
Any college football fan lecturing UT fans on Schiano is a person lying to themselves about their fanbase.
We’ll see how Bama fans react after Saban is gone :)
You guys have been saying that for 10 years. One year, you’ll get it right.
When you say protesting on campus are you referring to the less than a 100 people that did.
Oof.
I can’t stand watching blind coon hounds sniffing around for the water dish…. here let me push it under your nose, read about 30 random program’s local news stories and fans comments. Yes you will read a few comments that have some of the Tennessee sentiment, but volume and intensity of the whining at T is Rocky Top. Nobody is as bad as you make them out to be. Not Fulmer, not Dooley, not Jones, and it not even close. 3 2 1
How many Big 12 Championships had Oklahoma State won?, Gundy won?, and you honestly think these coaches are ransom their entire coaching future for the privilege of selling their already nice homes and uprooting their wife and kids?
You are country as hell…
#1 and foremost, this is not Tennessee fans fault. The fans do not hire or fire coaches, they do not hire and fire ADs,and do not hire and fire the President of the university. All fans in the SEC are like Tennessee’s. If you say, your lying. Go listen to Paul Finebaum for couple of hours and tell me Im lying. This lays at the feet of the AD and administration at UT. It all started with Mike Hamilton and Jimmy Cheek wanting Fulmer out the door and snowballed from there. Its just a series of bad hires of coaches and administrators. When Currie was hired, most Tennessee fans knew this was the wrong hire. Currie was under Mike Hamilton which started this fiasco. Most of us wanted either Fulmer or Blackburn. Shoulda, woulda, coulda is Tennessee’s moto right now. To place a blame on fans is ridiculous. All fans voice their opinions and frustrations. We do not hire or fire though. All the media blasted Currie for waiting so long to fire Jones, then when he screws up the hiring process, blame should be at his feet and the Univ president. All SEC fans are crazed idiots, thats what makes the SEC the best conference. Football is life down south. I was born and raised by this fact. I say fire the whole lot and start over. They have repeatedly shown not to have the best interest of UT at heart.
No doubt, Currie is in way over his head. He’s timid and indecisive, with zero PR awareness. However, you’ve got a blind spot regarding the fanbase. A small minority of UT’s fans are delusional, childish narcissists. You guys are letting them paint all of Big Orange with the same brush. The combo of a weak AD and idiotic fan fringe is costing UT big. You could probably get away lightly with one or the other, but not both.
I’m not sure that I’ve heard a single TN fan go a year without wanting someone fired. If you think that’s normal and productive I don’t know what to tell you. It’s a constant toxic brew of arrogant fans who think championships are their birth right.
You know why you got Dooley? Because everyone could plainly see the start of a dumpster fire fueled by fan expectations. I saw this coming a mile away without knowing a thing about Currie.
If you think that’s why we got Dooley you really didn’t pay attention. LOL.
Lemme give Currie a hint: He’s black and has road on campus named after him as well as a wax statue in the football building.
Currie has proven to be not so bright that’s a given. I suppose throwing out some big money at gundy was worth a shot but he was a long shot at best. we should sign up morris or broughm or norvelle but there are also some good assistants out there that we should take a hard look at. There is turmoil for sure but the toxicity levels are not as bad as the media would have you believe. A very small minority of fans overreacted and regardless of the claims made by some vols posters on here or that small group of fans that protested and tweeted, they don’t know what schiano saw or did and nobody but schiano will ever know that. What’s done is done. We can’t rewind the clock. We will survive the media attacks, the relentless attack from other fan bases and coaches and move on. We are set back once again by another pretty sad looking AD so he may need to go away soon too. Once the coach is hired and things settle down it will mostly just be the same old UT bashers doing their thing. The media is milking it for all it’s worth. It’s what they do.
Is Currie really the highest paid AD in the conference? That just sounds crazy. Can anyone say they have ever seen more incompetence at this level before. Ever?
Everyone go back and read the comments on Schiano before the fallout. Almost all tje media, including Paul Finebaum, was saying what a POS Schiano was and he was wrong for Tennessee. Then after Currie pulled the plug, its like all the media,Finebaum included, forgot what they all said the previous day.Its ridiculous. Now they all flipped trying to cover their tracks blaming it soley on the fans. Go look it up.
Chip please drop it. Everyone knows where you gone down in the issue. It will never die as long as you and others keep going on and on. Let’s move on for crying out loud.
I think the media backlash about Schiano was because of the Penn St. BS that got caught up in it. Ya’ll painted a giant rock that he was complicit in CHILD RAPE for God’s sake.
That rock is freaking cancer. Blow it up.
UT is now at Rocky Bottom. The protests, #emptyneyland, etc. Why would any coach with a good résumé want to risk having a stain on his career by taking a step into that tire fire? Blame whomever you like, but in reality it’s 10% Currie, 90% fans. And the rest of t he country is laughing.
Well if you say do dimwit.
40+ million couldn’t buy you a coach with a winning record, and you still believe that UT is a destination job and a top 10, and I’m the dimwit? Ok fella…
I never said it is a top 10 job and yes you are a dimwit.
Honestly I think it’s more like 90% Currie. He waiting WAY to long to pull the trigger on firing Butch. That’s what caused #emptyneyland and really got the VFL Twitterverse all stirred up.
If Currie had been a good AD, fired Butch as soon as it was obvious(probably around Oct. 15th) and gotten the job of hiring a new coach started right away…I think UT would be sitting pretty with a Chip Kelley or Dan Mullen right now.
Kind of cherry picking some tweets there. Yes there were plenty of fans upset and many still upset. I am only disappointed that Gundy was trotted out after the initial fiasco. I’m not surprised by the, “No”, but I am happy that at least Currie went after a legit coach this time. I would rather UT take the rejections (yes, I know there will be many) before settling. But at least try to get the homerun hire.
Hard to figure why he is not trying to get leach or petrino.
On Clay Travis this morning Kiffin sounded pretty open to the job. If Currie reached out to Kiffin and offered the same package as he did Gundy you guys would get him in a heartbeat.
I believe that you would be correct and I would be fine with it. Didn’t like him leaving, but can’t fault anyone for going after their “dream job”. He did it knowing that he was going to be taking over an NCAA punished program too.
This is more than ridiculous. Every coach doesn’t want to pack up and move just because you are the SEC. They aren’t scared, but Gundy was born and raised in Oklahoma and that’s his home. He played QB for the Cowboys and now he’s their coach and doing pretty well.
How the hell is any of that the AD’s fault? Just being stupid is what this is all about. I do understand the frustration, but quit being dumbasses.
