UAB, Tennessee’s Week 1 opponent in 2015, is in danger of having its football program shut down, head coach Bill Clark confirmed to ESPN’s Joe Schad.

“I think it’s going to happen,” Clark told Schad, according to the report. “Unless something changes before the weekend ends, I think it’s over. I think the odds are very high it ends this week. To shut the doors? That’s sad.”

Clark told ESPN that he has been in contact with school and Conference USA officials as recently as Sunday. Athletic Director Brian Mackin has also been in discussions with the school on a separation agreement, sources told ESPN.

Despite the Blazers making a five-win improvement and getting financial pledges from independent resources for facility upgrades in 2014, the school want wanted to move slow on future football related commitments, including a contract extension for Clark.

Tennessee is scheduled to face UAB on Sept. 5, 2015 at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn. The Vols football program has not commented on Blazers’ situation, but might take action in scheduling an alternate option should UAB shut down.
