Volunteers RB Alvin Kamara, LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin and TE Jakob Johnson attended Saturday’s Tennessee vs. Mississippi basketball game as more than spectators. The teammates sat with a block of fellow students, all dressed in black, protesting lawmakers’ recent vote to take away state funding from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, according to reports by The Tennessean and SEC Country.

Kamara tweeted a photo with Reeves-Maybin, before the game, holding a sign with the hashtag #MyDiversityMatters.

State representatives appear to be targeting the diversity office for controversial online posts regarding usage of gender-neutral pronouns and guidelines for holiday parties. The protesting students view the Senate Education Committee’s unanimous vote as wholly defunding the office. Sen. Delores Gresham, who proposed the amendment, claims that was not her intention, as she told The Tennessean earlier in the week:

In an interview Wednesday evening, Gresham said she didn’t know that no federal funds went to the diversity office, meaning the amendment stood to defund the office completely.

“That’s not my understanding,” Gresham said. “I would not completely defund the office. I think that would be extremely injurious. I would not do that, so I’ll have to double-check that because that’s not my understanding.”

Gresham’s Wednesday comments were not enough to stop the students from protesting at Saturday’s basketball game. SEC Country noted that students chanted “UT diversity matters” and staged a walkout.
