The Tennessee Volunteers will face Bowling Green during their opening game of the 2015 season on Sept. 5 at LP Field in Nashville, the team announced Tuesday. Bowling Green replaces Tennessee’s original opponent, UAB, after the school announced its plans to shut down the football program last week.

“We are pleased to announce that we have been able to maintain our plans to open the 2015 season in Nashville, now against Bowling Green,” said Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Dave Hart.

Bowling Green is 7-6 this season after appearing in the MAC Championship Game last weekend. The upcoming matchup marks the first meeting between the two programs. The Vols last game against a MAC opponent was on Sept. 22, 2012, when they defeated Akron 47-26.

Tennessee has appeared in two games at LP Field, including a season opening win in 2002 against Wyoming. The Vols’ most recent appearance came in the 2010 Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl against North Carolina. Tennessee lost 30-27.
