Tennessee wing Julian Phillips is currently going through the NBA Draft process while keeping his college eligibility.

Should he choose to return to school, it seems he doesn’t intend to return to Knoxville. According to multiple reports on Wednesday, Phillips plans to put his name into the transfer portal. Rivals’ Rob Cassidy was first to report the news.

Phillips has an invite to the NBA Combine scheduled for next week in Chicago. There, he’ll get some much-needed feedback about his draft status. He’ll have 10 days from the end of the Combine (May 31) to decide whether to keep his name in the Draft or pull it out and return to school.

A former 5-star recruit and a McDonald’s All-American, Phillips averaged 8.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 32 games with the Vols last season (25 starts). He shot 24% from the 3-point line, though, and nearly averaged as many turnovers (1.3) as assists.

Phillips is an interesting NBA prospect, with a frame that teams covet (6-foot-8) but a skillset that is still developing. Consistency was a question mark throughout his debut season, yet he showed flashes of brilliance and landed a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team for his efforts.

He’s currently in Portland participating in the Trail Blazers’ first predraft workout alongside 5 others, according to Rose Garden Report’s Sean Highkin.

The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie has Phillips sitting at No. 39 on his pre-Combine big board. Would another year in school be more attractive than a second-round selection?

Perhaps, but it no longer seems likely that path will lead him back to Tennessee.
