Tennessee joined an illustrious set of SEC teams on Tuesday when the program earned the No.1 spot in the initial 2022 College Football Playoff rankings.

Tennessee now becomes the 5th SEC squad to earn a No. 1 ranking in the history of the CFP. The other 4 programs are Alabama, Georgia, LSU, and Mississippi State. Proving how truly loaded the SEC is, no other conference has more than 1 representative since the CFP launched in 2014.

During the CFP era, the SEC has won the national title 5 out of 8 years. The SEC has captured the last 3 CFP championships (LSU, Alabama, and Georgia). Alabama, whom Tennessee topped 52-49 earlier this season, has 3 national titles in that span.

Additionally, the SEC has never missed out on the Playoff, with at least 1 participant every season.

Tennessee’s last national title came in 1998 during the BCS era. Tennessee topped Florida State to complete a 13-0 season.

No. 1 Tennessee vs. No. 3 Georgia is set for 3:30 p.m. ET and can be viewed on CBS. Tennessee is hoping to snap a 5-game losing streak against Georgia. The Bulldogs hold the edge in the all-time series 26-23-2.
