Tony Vitello lands national coach of the year honor for 2022 season
Tony Vitello is being honored for Tennessee’s record-setting 2022 season. Perfect Game, one of the leading publications covering college baseball, named Vitello the National Coach of the Year for the second season in a row.
In 2022, Vitello’s fifth season at UT, the Volunteers won 57 games, a program record, dropping only 9. The Vols won their first SEC regular-season and tournament titles since 1995 while earning the No. 1 national overall seed for the NCAA Tournament.
The 2022 season marked Tennessee’s third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. UT swept through the Knoxville Regional with wins over Alabama State (10-0), Campbell (12-7) and Georgia Tech (9-6).
Win No. 57 came in Game 2 of the Knoxville Super Regional when the Vols avoided elimination by defeating Notre Dame 12-4. The Irish took Game 3, ending Tennessee’s 2022 season.
Vitello has a 191-77 record as Tennessee’s head coach, taking the Vols to the College World Series in 2021.

Tennessee sports betting officially launched on November 1, 2020. Tennessee was the first SEC state to legalize sports betting.
Congrats to Coach Vitali & the Vols!
Good luck in the CWS!
What?
Really?
Ok…nevermind.
Tin R C sucks regularly in many sports. It’s what they do. Don’t be mad at them.
That’s not true. We both know it. Does TN pull an Amber Heard when it matters most? Yup. Almost every single time. You can’t win the SEC in basketball and baseball and say they suck at sports. TN baseball, as annoying as they and a lot of the fans might have been during the season, were nothing short of dominant and easily the best team in college. But TN is gonna TN and blew it. It will be a looooooooong time before we see the field in Atlanta in December. I am well aware of that Bama and GA are way too far in front of us. But saying they suck in many sports is just ignorant. Football, we aren’t great so I will agree with you there.
It’s very true. You had one season where you dominated the regular season. Congrats.
Tennessee isnt even in the same conversation as LSU when it comes to winning in baseball.
Regional appearances:
LSU – 34
TN – 12
Regional Champions:
LSU – 25
TN – 5
CWS Appearances:
LSU – 18
TN – 5
National Championships:
LSU – 6
TN – 0
Yep. One season. The most recent one. All I was really talking about at the moment. Until Vitello showed up, we were mediocre in our best years at baseball. LSU has always had good sports teams across the board it seems. Somewhat jealous of it actually. I have never figured out how LSU manages to recruit as well as they do in all sports given that Baton Rouge gives you a chronic case of sweaty balls just thinking about it.
This is a nice consultation prize for the coach. He can use it for a contract extension and pay raise.
*Consolation
Thanks for that assist. Unfortunately I do typos more often than I would like to.
Anybody else see the Tennessee player commenting on their baseball “dynasty” despite getting bounced before Omaha? Good stuff.
They owned the regular season and the SEC tournament and since the SEC is half the field, the conference championship means a good deal. In the last three years, UT has an 80.7% wining percentage. If you know much about baseball, that’s impressive.
You’re talking to the wrong posters VT
They’re as much of a Dynasty as the 90’s Buffalo Bills.
You actually have to win a few rings before you can call yourself that.
I’m a Braves fan, and I even I know the 90’s Braves are not a dynasty. They’re a team that won a single ring when they at the very least should have won three (’96 and ’97).
That’s exactly why Bobby Cox is the most overrated manager in the history of baseball. Three HOF starters in Glavine, Smoltz, and Maddux, and only one ring, and he tried his best to give that one away pulling Glavine in that game six after eight innings that year.
And the Braves only won that one after being GIFTED Fred McGriff and the CF from Montreal. (forget his name) Extremely overrated manager.
Marquis Grissom.
^^ Thank you. I can still remember the Padres giving away McGriff for a bag of baseballs and a catcher’s mit. There was something smelly about all that.
@YOUWORSHIPAFOOTBALLTEAM Very impressive. Not a dynasty.
It takes more than three years to greater a dynasty, many more. Plus, I haven’t heard of many dynasties who have never won a NC. As for the article, great year, bad example.
Not sure how the national CoTY can be realistically determined before the season is complete. Seems like the guy holding the trophy at the end might want a say in that.
And yet there it is.
Champion of Life. Baseball style.
BWAHAHAHAHA.
SEC Champs and what did the turds do? …….Im waiting….

Wow, when you say it like that it almost looks like a…dynasty.
The 2000s have been kind to Florida.
I didnt even see this and commented with a very similar post above. TN fans think theyre good in baseball when truthfully, take this season away and you have a very mediocre baseball team with a history of losing seasons.
Sounds like the voters who chose this clown, collectively had then Vols winning it all, with no doubt.
He was deserving of the award. Say what you want about the team being obnoxious (cause they were) but he put together a great season. They did really well last year too. Most major sports awards aren’t usually won by a person that was on the championship team. And prior to Vitello showing up in Knoxville, the baseball team was mediocre at best. UT outscored it’s opponents this year by over 400 runs. I know “thEy DidN’t OuTScore Nd”. They pulled an Amber Heard like usual in a big game situation. Saying what the Vols did this year wasn’t impressive and didn’t warrant some awards, other than biggest d-bags, is ignorant
I will not act like I follow college baseball, but in any sport, I never understood awards going out before the season is completed.
Yeah so we aren’t a baseball power. We did however win a world series once. Tennessee? Yeah, not a dynasty.
You walked into that one, Fuzz – UF is superior to
UT historically in college baseball. They do have a weather advantage.
You left out basketball and football
Bittersweet. He would trade it in in a heartbeat to get a change in Omaha. Next year, I guess. It was a fun ride regardless. Pulling for the other SEC teams like Arky and AllBarn (not you, Aggies.)
I agree with the award going to Coach Tony. Most awards are for the regular season and not for playoffs or championships. UT had the best regular season of any team this year, and Coach T should be Coach of the Year. Now if he can just get them to play baseball and not be so darn cocky they might be liked by others a little better.
