Tennessee players were stunned following the 38-30 loss to Georgia State in their opener on Saturday. But part of the problem, their quarterback said, was that the Panthers surprised the Vols.

QB Jarrett Guarantano told reporters, including Wes Rucker of 247Sports and David Ubben of The Athletic, that Georgia State, “did a really good job disguising things. They did everything that we didn’t see on tape, possibly. They played very well. They played very aggressive. We weren’t expecting the things that they were showing.”

“I thought the offense played really, really hard. But I don’t think we played smart,” Guarantano said.

“I’m disgusted, to be honest,” the Tennessee quarterback, who had two fourth-quarter turnovers, was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. “I’m not going to sugarcoat this. I’m really upset right now. I’m (ticked) and all those types of things. Why shouldn’t we be?”

Georgia State’s win was the first against a Power 5 opponent since the Sun Belt Conference team launched in 2010.

In a somewhat troubling comment, Guarantano said that he didn’t even want to go outside after the game. The Vols QB was 26-for-40 passing for 311 yards with two TDs and one interception.

Tennessee returns to action next week against BYU.
