This just in: Vanderbilt and Tennessee don’t like each other very much.

Many Vols fans insist the rivalry between the two schools, which are situated about three hours apart on Interstate 40, doesn’t extend to the gridiron due to the Vols’ 75-30-5 all-time record against the Commodores.

But whether it’s video of locker room celebration from Derek Dooley following a win against Vanderbilt or the Commodores starting to call Tennessee “Our State” following a couple of wins against the Vols, it is clear that people recently involved with the rivalry believe it to be a real thing on the football field.

Vols beat reporter Patrick Brown posted this snippet from Tennessee DB Todd Kelly Jr. to Twitter following Saturday’s spring practice period, which is sure to ruffle some feathers in Nashville:

Bob Shoop, who is Tennessee’s new defensive coordinator, spent three seasons as Vanderbilt’s defensive coordinator from 2011-13 prior to following James Franklin to Penn State in 2014.

Kelly, who played high school ball in Knoxville, was one of the top-rated prep players in the state for the 2014 recruiting cycle.

What Shoop may remind Kelly of is that his Commodores defense beat the Vols in two of his three seasons at Vanderbilt, with the lone loss coming in overtime at Neyland Stadium in 2011.

And forget Vanderbilt for a minute.

That comment covered the other schools in the state as well. Memphis and Middle Tennessee players are certainly taking note as well.
