Tennessee and West Virginia are scheduled to meet once again to open a college football season.

This time, the Vols and the Mountaineers will open the 2028 season in Duke’s Mayo Classic from Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium (home of the Carolina Panthers).

The game is set to be played on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2028.

“This should be a fun showcase game for our program in a city and venue our fans enjoy visiting,” Tennessee Director of Athletics Danny White said. “Opening our season against a quality opponent like West Virginia will serve as a valuable experience for our team prior to SEC play.”

The two programs met in the 2018 season opener with West Virginia winning 40-14 in a game that was the start of the Jeremy Pruitt era on Rocky Top. The 2018 opener is the only meeting between the two programs on the gridiron.

West Virginia now becomes the only team currently on Tennessee’s 2028 non-conference schedule. Tennessee has upcoming home-and-home matchups scheduled with Pitt and Nebraska.
