What Jeremy Pruitt said about QB Brian Maurer suffering another concussion
The Tennessee Volunteers have turned to freshman Brian Maurer as their starting quarterback, but he’s had a rough couple of weeks.
For two games in a row now, he’s left the action with a concussion. Based on what we know now about head injuries, that’s a really scary thing.
After the game, though, coach Jeremy Pruitt seemed nonchalant about Maurer’s injury, saying the Vols will wait and see what happens (via 247Sports):
“They’re evaluating Brian. So we’ll see what happens. Jarrett (Guarantano) did some really nice things while he was in the game. So we’ll go back and just reevaluate like we do every week.”
With concussions in back-to-back weeks, Maurer could end up missing the rest of the season. That isn’t known at this time, but head injuries are nothing to laugh at.
What is Pruit supposed to say? He wasn’t laughing at it. Sounds like you want him to say he is done for the year. 2 concussions in 2 weeks is cause for concern. They definitely need to take Thier time with him. I really like how kid plays and he is good for team. Hope he fully recovers and doesn’t get gun shy.
If he had a concussion last week and then another this week did even go into concussion protocol? If he did there is no way he is cleared protocol that quickly.
He didn’t go through any contact at practice during the week leading up to the Alabama game. There is no ‘set protocol’ for concussions in the NCAA so outside of evaluating and monitoring to gauge how the player is performing and responding, there isn’t really a magic number to go by.
Plus, there are various grades of concussions to keep in mind, etc. For instance, at no point did he get knocked out either week, in fact, he bounced up pretty quick and took the next snap against Miss St. and was waving his arms around to get the crowd pumped up.
Plus, a part of getting cleared from concussions relies on the player giving honest feedback about how they feel. If he isn’t 100%, he is more susceptible to additional concussions. I hope he doesn’t try to rush back and takes care of himself because he has a good future ahead of himself playing football.
Maurer didn’t suffer concussion number 1. He was put in concussion protocol because UT’s policy includes neck injuries.
i hope maurer is good to go he really lit a spark in our team but his health and saftey is most important and always next season
