Texas cruised to a huge 52-0 win over Colorado State on Saturday afternoon.

The Longhorns were utterly dominant in what was their 1st official game as a member of the SEC. Quarterback Quinn Ewers had an outstanding day that was punctuated by a no-look touchdown pass to Matthew Golden.

Defensively, Texas didn’t allow Colorado State to create any momentum in this game. The Rams did not gain more than 26 yards on any individual drive through the first 3 quarters.

Here are 3 takeaways from Texas’ big win:

Elite quarterback play

As mentioned above, Ewers was excellent in this contest. He completed 20-of-27 passes for 260 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. The pick was Ewers’ lone blemish on the day, but it didn’t de-rail the UT offense. Ewers led Texas to points on its next 5 possessions.

The scoring didn’t stop there, however. Former 5-star prospect Arch Manning entered the game late in the 3rd quarter for the first semi-significant snaps of his collegiate career. Manning led Texas on a 4-play, 49-yard touchdown drive in his first series.

Manning finished with 95 yards on 5-of-6 passing. He threw for a 1 touchdown and also rushed for a score.

Texas’ running back depth

Texas’ running back room was hit hard by injuries during fall camp, with projected starter CJ Baxter and true freshman Christian Clark suffering serious injuries. The Longhorns’ running back depth is likely to be a question mark all season, but they looked good on Saturday in Week 1 against Colorado State.

Jaydon Blue got the first opportunities, but freshman Jerrick Gibson also earned a significant number of snaps in the backfield. Both Blue and Gibson rushed for over 5 yards per attempt in the win.

Blue ended the game with 57 yards on 11 carries. Gibson added 67 yards and 1 touchdown on 10 attempts.

Texas’ defense was dominant

Texas’ defense was lights out in this contest. Colorado State averaged just 3.4 yards per play and turned it over twice. Colorado State quarterbacks combined to throw for just 74 yards on 10-of-18 passing.

Texas did not have any sacks in this game, but it was credited with 5 tackles for loss and 2 quarterback hurries. Jahdae Barron and Wardell Mack registered interceptions in the win.

Texas will face Michigan on the road in Week 2 in what should be one of the biggest games of the weekend for college football.
