Chris Beard, Texas men’s basketball coach, was arrested and charged with assault on a family member early Monday, according to multiple reports.

Austin police spokesman Brandon Jones said it is alleged that Beard strangled a person at a home in Tarrytown. Officers responded to a 911 “disturbance-urgent” call at 2:07 a.m. Monday, reported Tony Plohetski of the Austin American-Statesman and KVUE. Beard was arrested at 4:18 a.m. on Monday and charged with assault on a family/household member, Jeff Goodman of Stadium reported. Beard was booked with a third-degree felony.

Beard is in his second season at Texas. He took the job in the summer of 2021 after a successful run with Texas Tech.

The Longhorns are 7-1 and ranked No. 2 in the country in the AP Top 25. They are set to play Rice on Monday night.
