ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) predicts the outcome of each college football game ahead of each weekend. The regular season is now finished so the upcoming week is all about conference championships. The model has updated its predictions following a wild regular-season finale.
There will be a rematch between the Texas Longhorns and Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC. The model sees the Longhorns as the favorite, giving the team a 61.5% chance to win. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, are getting a 38.5% chance to pull off the upset in Atlanta.
Entering this matchup, the Longhorns have an 11-1 record while the Bulldogs have a 10-2 mark. The Bulldogs took down Georgia Tech in a wild 8-overtime game while the Longhorns earned a spot in the championship by knocking off Texas A&M in Week 14.
The Longhorns’ lone loss on their schedule came to the Bulldogs in October. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, have losses to Alabama and Ole Miss. In the first matchup between these new SEC foes, the Bulldogs won 30-15 in Austin.
In that first meeting, the Bulldogs dominated the Longhorns at the line of scrimmage. The Longhorns turned the ball over 4 times and allowed a whopping 7 sacks. The Longhorns’ ground game was totally stifled, with the team being held to just 29 cumulative rushing yards.
Carson Beck did have one of his worst games of the season against the Longhorns, though. The QB threw 0 touchdowns and 3 interceptions while completing just over half of his passes.
This will be the 7th all-time meeting between these classic powers. The Longhorns have won 4 of the previous matchups. The SEC Championship will kick off from Atlanta on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ET.
