Joel Klatt saw 3 scenarios where Texas could be left out of the College Football Playoff.
The Longhorns currently sit at 9-1 with Iowa State and Texas Tech left on the schedule.
Klatt noted that the Longhorns would need help on Wednesday’s edition of the Joel Klatt Show.
“Texas is in a bind, a real bind. When you start looking at these closely, you start realizing that Texas is being boxed out, probably 3 different ways. It’s going to be really tough for them to overcome this,” said Klatt. “Texas needs help, and I know you already knew that Longhorn fans.”

The 1st way would be if Florida State, Ohio State or Michigan, Georgia, and Washington all win out.
“There is a path where there are 4 undefeated Power 5 champions. Florida State looks like they could remain undefeated,” said Klatt. “You gotta at least imagine that Ohio State or Michigan will be undefeated, so that’s 2 spots. Then you’re looking at Georgia could remain undefeated or Washington.”
The 2nd way that Texas could be left out would be if Florida State, Ohio State or Michigan, and Georgia win out. However, if Oregon beats Washington in the Pac-12 Championship Texas would also be boxed out.
“Here’s the next way that they could be boxed out. Florida State wins, you’ve got the Big Ten winner Ohio State or Michigan they win out, and Georgia wins out. Then, Oregon beats Washington just straight up,” said Klatt. “They’re 12-1 and a champ and the committee has shown that they think Oregon is better than Texas.”
The last scenario would be heartbreaking for Texas fans.
Klatt’s final way that Texas could be boxed out involves Florida State winning out, an undefeated Big Ten champion, Oregon or Washington winning the Pac-12, and Alabama beating Georgia in the SEC Championship.
Klatt noted that it would be absurd, but at the same time everyone would be campaigning for Alabama to get in over Texas if so.
“That 3rd way, you can hear it. You can hear the drumbeat, you hear it every Saturday. You hear this drumbeat for a 12-1 Alabama. Florida State remains undefeated, the Big Ten champion remains undefeated, Oregon goes 12-1 or Washington goes undefeated and Bama beats Georgia. Guess what? There are gonna be a lot of voices, not mine, spewing the propaganda that Alabama deserves to be in the Playoff over Texas, which is absurd.”
