Mel Kiper suggests Quinn Ewers may need to return to college in 2025, transfer from Texas

Mel Kiper Jr. has some concerns regarding Quinn Ewers’ future after seeing his play during the regular season.

A former 5-star prospect, Ewers has long been expected to turn pro after the 2024 campaign. However, he has struggled this season and has been less-efficient as a passer than he was a year ago. He’s also battled injury issues throughout the year and has started to fall down draft boards as a result.

Kiper appeared on the First Draft podcast on Thursday and made the bold claim that Ewers may need to look to transfer elsewhere for the 2025 season in order to build up his draft stock before heading to the NFL. A return to Texas would be complicated, Kiper argued, due to the presence of Arch Manning on the Texas roster.

“Arch Manning is going to be the quarterback at Texas next year,” Kiper said. “So if you want to play college football, you probably have to move on somewhere. I would do that if I’m Quinn Ewers. I would not come out unless I really played phenomenal football in these playoff games and came into this draft process with tremendous momentum. I don’t want to become a 2nd or 3rd-round pick.”

Manning, a former 5-star prospect in his own right, has already sat behind Ewers for 2 seasons. He’s stepped in for Ewers on a number of occasions this season and has generally performed well. He’s completed 61-of-90 passes for 939 yards, 9 touchdowns and 2 picks. Manning has also scored 4 rushing touchdowns on the season.

It will be interesting to see if Manning has a role — particularly in the red zone — during Texas’s first-round CFP game against Clemson on Saturday. Kickoff for that contest is set for 4 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.
