Steve Sarkisian drew criticism when he left the field without singing “The Eyes of Texas” with his team after Texas fell to No. 11 Oklahoma State 41-34 in Stillwater on Saturday. The loss snapped a 3-game Longhorns win streak and was the 2nd straight win for the Cowboys in the series.

On Monday, during his Monday press conference heading into the Longhorns’ bye week, Sarkisian offered an apology for not participating in the postgame tradition.

“I owe an apology to Longhorn Nation. I made a mistake at the end of game in not singing ‘The Eyes of Texas’ when the game was done. That was not anything intentional, that was not anything that had to do with our players. I think our players just followed me up the ramp to the locker room,” he said. “Obviously upset by the way the game ended, literally walked off the field. So I apologize to everybody for that. That will never happen again.”

Sarkisian took the reins from Tom Herman, who was fired after a 32-18 overall mark and a 7-3 record in 2020. The former USC head coach and Alabama offensive coordinator’s record is now 10-10 through 20 games.

While a bowl game is still in the cards in 2022, the return on investment that Texas is getting from Sarkisian after Herman’s ouster isn’t quite what anyone had in mind.
