Texas punished by SEC after fans throw trash on field during Georgia game
Texas has received punishment from the SEC for Saturday’s incident involving Longhorns fans at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium during the game against Georgia, as they threw trash on the field after a controversial offensive pass interference call negated an interception. The call was later reversed.
Texas has been fined $250,000 by the conference. The university has also been requested to identify anyone that was involved in the incident; those fans will be banned from all Longhorn sporting events for the remainder of the school year.
“The throwing of debris and resulting interruption of play that took place Saturday night cannot be part of any SEC event,” SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement. “The SEC is assigned responsibility by its membership to enforce its sportsmanship and game management policies and these actions are consistent with that oversight responsibility, including the financial penalty and mandated reviews.”
Texas has also been asked to review its alcohol policies, and while alcohol sales have not been banned, the SEC threatened to do so if the university does not meet the standards set by the conference.
Georgia won 30-15 to improve to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference. Texas suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 6-1 on the season and 2-1 in the SEC.
that’s a fair punishment to the university. but, what about the punishment….er at least public reprimand to the officiating crew?
bad calls will happen, but blatant ignorance or a lack of understanding to the rules is another.
Get in line. South Carolina is already at the front after being screwed in much more blatant ways. I didn’t see that much controversy in the call. At least it go reviewed. And it didn’t impact the game. Go watch South Carolina’s game against LSU if you want to see blatant ignorance and lack of understanding rules.
The throwing of debris and resulting interruption of play that took place Saturday night cannot be part of any SEC event BUT…pisssss poor officiating that led to the chaos is encouraged!
Hold on Sankey….Vegas betting on line 1, hello?
I am sure that this will be as effective as the fines for storming the field. If they really wanted to stop it, they could.
Hold the officiating crew accountable
Agreed. And do it publicly.
That rarely happens. The officials in the Mizzou/Colorado 5th down game were suspended for a whole week! That’s about as severe as it gets for officials and that one was much more egregious than Saturday’s game.
And they had to have body guards assigned to them after multiple death threats. This was the worst call in college football history. I just hate it was against my team…
I either forgot or never even knew about the bodyguard bit. That’s nuts, but yeah, it was much worse officiating than what happened in the UT/GA game. At least in the UT/GA game they ended up getting the call right, despite the peculiar way of getting there.
This is the low class nonsense that Texas and their pro
This is what the privileged university of Texas brings to the SEC. They have been the top dog for so long in the big 12 they and their fans feel they can get away with anything.
They created their own TV network while in the big12 and drove4 teams out of the conference.
Um, they were clearly not the “top dog for so long in the big 12” as OU won 14 of 28 Big XII championships while both were in the conference, while saxet was a far distant second with 4. As far as “they and their fans feel they can get away with anything” is correct.
They caused Arkansas to leave the SWC before those four schools left the B12. Their hubris is nauseating. Just wait: they’ll have Birmingham moved to Dallas before they’re done.
Not sure why the on-the-field officials didn’t call unsportsmanlike like penalty on the Texas bench immediately, what were they waiting for?
Also, the head of officiating in Birmingham could have reviewed it as well on the spot. The game was delayed several minutes to clean up the mess.
Guess they prefer to let the league office make up for their lack of in-game judgement.
Hats off to the coach, coaching staff and cheerleaders for jumping in and clearing the debris like they did. They can’t control what the crowd does, but that coach sure jumped in the middle of it and made them stop.
A 15-yard penalty or two were the minimum that was warranted. Plus, there should have been a clear explanation of the non-review ‘review’ and pickup of the flag.
Pass interference is not reviewable.
Classless and entitled..
SEC! SEC! SEC!
Them horns down in the dirt as Bevo face planted. Low class TX fans as expected!
Alchohol is not banned, so exactly what freakin’ policy or “standard” does the SEC expect them to review? Either you’re allowed to sell alcohol or not, there is no “SEC standard” to selling it and for the SEC to market “The greatest Coctail Party” and other events the way they do then suddenly act like there is, is laughable. There’s actually another more applicable word for it, but I’ll refrain.
Texas got manhandled as well as outcoached. Awesome win for UGA. Perfect welcome to the SEC for TU
As all A&M fans tried to tell you… this is par for the course with this team. The ‘horns have always tried intimidation to get their way. I don’t trust Sankey to stand up to them.
