Texas Tech became the first Power 5 program to hire a new coach this coaching cycle, according to multiple reports.
Joey McGuire, who won 3 Texas high school state championships before he joined the staff at Baylor for the past 5 seasons, is expected to be hired as the next head coach at Texas Tech, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported. McGuire would replace Matt Wells, whom Tech dismissed on Oct. 25, midway through his third season.
It is unknown when McGuire would join Texas Tech as he is the associate head coach and outside linebackers coach at Baylor, which is 7-2. The teams play a regular-season finale against each other on Nov. 27 in Waco.
McGuire joined Matt Rhule’s original staff at Baylor as tight ends coach in 2017 and 2018 and as defensive ends coach in 2019. When Rhule left to become head coach of the Carolina Panthers, McGuire stayed on as a member of Dave Aranda’s staff, now as outside linebackers coach in 2020 and 2021.
Texas Tech is expected to name Baylor assistant Joey McGuire as the next head coach, three sources told A-J Media on Sunday
