The Vanderbilt Commodores finished 3-9 (0-8 SEC) in Derek Mason’s first season as head coach. The Commodores’ three wins came against Massachusetts (34-31), Charleston Southern (21-20) and Old Dominion (42-28), with each played at Vanderbilt Stadium. Here’s a look at how Vanderbilt graded at each position in 2014.

OFFENSE: D-

Vanderbilt ranked No. 122 in total offense, with an average of 288.8 yards per game. The Commodores also ranked No. 117 in scoring offense, No. 106 in passing offense and No. 112 in rushing offense. All four quarterbacks — Patton Robinette, Johnny McCrary, Wade Freebeck and Stephen Rivers — made starts in 2014 as Vanderbilt made more than 10 quarterback changes.

Ralph Webb provided the most consistent production for the Commodores offense. The Gainesville, Fla., native set the school freshman rushing record with 907 yards on 212 carries, ranking 10th in the SEC.

DEFENSE: D+

Vanderbilt’s defense ranked No. 70 overall and allowed an average of 402.1 yards per game. The Commodores also ranked No. 50 in passing defense, No. 86 in rushing defense and No. 104 in points allowed. However, Vanderbilt’s lack of success was due in part to the offense’s ability to provide any production and keep the unit off the field, while also forcing the defense to defend poor field position. Nigel Bowden led the Commodores with 78 tackles. The redshirt freshman averaged seven per game, while also recording two tackles for loss and a sack.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B+

Tommy Openshaw went 8-of-11 on field goal attempts, recording a 72.7 average. He also went 21-of-21 on extra point attempts. Colby Cooke totaled 2,796 yards on 66 punts for an average of 42.4. Darrius Sims returned 31 kickoffs for 760 yards and two touchdowns for a 24.5 average. Trey Ellis had nine punt returns for 49 yards.

COACHING: D-

Derek Mason struggled in his first season in Nashville. However, the new staff inherited a young roster that lacked veteran leadership and experience. Mason’s team should improve moving forward, but the flaws were too great to overcome in year one. The coach must improve his program in year two in order to avoid an early dismissal.

OVERALL: D-

Vanderbilt’s season was a disaster. The Commodores went winless in SEC play and struggled against weak competition. Vanderbilt defeated Massachusetts and Charleston Southern by a combined four-point margin. Aside from a dominant win against Old Dominion, the Commodores were several plays from going winless for the season.
