The building job for Derek Mason at Vanderbilt continues and with the state of Tennessee loaded and Mason and his staff going into year three on the job, the 2017 recruiting cycle will be paramount.

So with that, here are five 2017 prospects that every Vanderbilt fan should know.

1. Rutger Reitmaier, DT, Nashville (Tenn.) Lipscomb Academy

Tennessee leads Vanderbilt currently for the services of Reitmaier, but the Commodores are in the mix for the 6-foot-3, 275-pound local product. He’s the No. 13 overall prospect in the state of Tennessee for the 2017 cycle per 247Sports Composite rankings and his stock should continue to rise throughout the cycle.

2. Jacob Phillips, LB, Nashville (Tenn.) East Nashville Magnet

Phillips, at 6-foot-3, 225-pounds, certainly is the type of big linebacker prospect that Mason and his staff covet for their 3-4 defensive scheme. Vanderbilt always seems to get at least a couple of local prospects, who have a slew of offers as Phillips does (Notre Dame, Tennessee, etc.) to stay at home and wear the Black and Gold. Could Phillips be that guy this cycle? He’s ranked as the No. 3 outside linebacker in the 2017 class per 247Sports Composite rankings.

3. Lamont Atkins, RB, Burke (Va.) Lake Braddock

The three-star rated Atkins committed to the Commodores in November and is the lone verbal commit for Vanderbilt. The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder was one of the more productive running backs in talent-rich northern Virginia last season.

4. Daulton Hyatt, QB, Attala (Ala.) Etowah

The 6-foot-4, 192-pound Hyatt has long been a signal caller that the Vanderbilt staff has been involved with and when you watch him on film- the way he sets up and throws the football- he’s an excellent fit for the Commodores. Wake Forest, Maryland, Illinois, Louisville and others.

5. Colin Anderson, LB, Killen (Ala.) Brooks

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Anderson is an athletic, quick-strike linebacker prospect from the state of Alabama who is only going to get better as he gets stronger and fills out his frame. Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State and others have offered in addition to the Commodores.
