Cal administrators may have been hoping that Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason was looking for a return to the west coast, but the Commodores coach has put those rumors to rest.

Mason replaced James Franklin at Vanderbilt on January 17, 2014. He spent the previous four years as a Stanford assistant under David Shaw, the likely reasoning behind the rumors connecting him to the Cal job.

At VU, Mason is 13-24 in three seasons. After a 6-6 mark in the 2016 regular season, which included wins over Georgia and Tennessee, the Commodores made their first postseason appearance under Mason with a trip to the Independence Bowl.

Cal fired coach Sonny Dykes on Sunday. The Golden Bears went 5-7 in 2016, missing a bowl game for the first time in four years.
