Jordan Matthews is heading back to San Francisco, but he’ll be playing a new position.

The 49ers announced Sunday that they have signed Matthews as a tight end. Matthews had been bulking up in recent months to appeal to teams seeking a tight end after experiencing a drastic reduction in playing time as a wide receiver.

After playing in 70 games from 2014-18, Jordan Matthews appeared in only five games over the past two seasons. Matthews played in two games for the San Francisco 49ers last season, recording no catches.

Matthews is now listed at 6-3, 236, about 20 pounds up from his previous playing weight. Matthews was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round (42nd overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. Throughout his seven-year NFL career with the Eagles (2014-16 & 2018-19), Buffalo Bills (2017) and 49ers (2019-20), he has appeared in 75 games (46 starts) and registered 274 receptions for 3,288 yards (12.0 average) and 22 touchdowns as a wide receiver.
