Frustration boiling over? Jerry Stackhouse goes on profanity-filled rant after Vanderbilt's latest loss
Vanderbilt remained winless in the SEC following a 92-71 loss to Arkansas on Saturday and coach Jerry Stackhouse was not in good mood about it.
After the game, Stackhouse went on an extended rant with the media as he all but singled out veteran players.
“We’ve got to clean some things up, got to find some guys who want to play basketball,” he said. “Right now, we got some guys that don’t want to play no damn basketball. We’ve got to figure that out sooner rather than later. I’d rather go with just young guys and Akeem (Odusipe) and those guys, give them a chance. We’ve got guys who’ve been here four or five years, and played 20 minutes and got one offensive rebound and one defensive rebound. We can’t win any games like that. We’ve got to find some guys that want to play.”
Odusipe and Dylan Disu were out because of contact tracing, Stackhouse said, and they hope to return soon.
Stackhouse also added, “At the end of the day,” he said, before pausing, “We’re just doing dumb, dumb stuff. I haven’t had any teams before where I tell them the same thing over and over again, and then they come out and do the same dumb shit.”
Vanderbilt fell to 4-7 overall and returns to action on Wednesday against Florida.

H/T Simon Gibbs.
WHat a clickbait title
“Profanity filled”
2 cusswords and neither one of them were bad.
“We’re just doing dumb, dumb stuff.” Yes, the dumb stuff was hiring this bozo as head coach when he had no prior college coaching experience and only minor league pro head coaching experience. He can’t recruit; he can’t make adjustments on the floor during games, and his team runs an offense and defense not anywhere close to what best suits their talent.
Meanwhile, the prior coach, who was fired because the Michael Jordan of Vanderbilt had a season-ending injury when the team was 4-0, has moved on to Grand Canyon, where GCU is in first place in the WAC for the first time in school’s history in year one. The prior coach also had the number one recruiter in the nation, and he has since moved to Gonzaga where he basically recruited the entire nucleus of the #1 team in the nation.
Meanwhile, after they fired the prior coach, they had strong interest from Eric Musselman and Russ Turner, but chose bozo the coach from the minor leagues. I think if you gave Stackhouse the 1992-1993 SEC Champions for a roster, he’d struggle to go 9-9 in the SEC.
The talent is bare but serviceable. This needs to be a team playing a 1-2-2 man/zone combo defense keeping the ball out of the lane and getting a hand in the face of perimeter shooters, and not a team trying to trap at midcourt and pressure the perimeter resulting in easy inside baskets and wide open weakside threes. The team totally lacks passing fundamentals, and that is almost all on the coach and staff. Players don’t appear to know what to do without the ball. I’ve seen Middle School coaches teach their players what to do when they don’t have the ball.
Vandy fans will hate this final comment–Clone Ray Mears and make him coach of this team, and Vanderbilt would be contending for the NIT, instead of 0-18 to 3-15 max. He’d turn Ejeke Obinna into a consistent 12 & 8 player that plugs the middle.
Now Stackhouse is cussing out fans and blocking them from Twitter. He’s now alienated three of Nashville’s most beloved media members as well. It is an insult to Bozo to compare Stackhouse to him. Time to say that this mistake is in the Rich Kotite mold.
Rumors abound that 2 or 3 of the top 8 players on this roster are entering the transfer portal after the year is done, and that doesn’t include Pippen, who might declare for the NBA Draft and choose to go the G-League route for a year or two rather than continue having to go down with the ship.
Vanderbilt’s roster next year will be 10 points weaker than this stinker. Unless a new coach can come in and quickly make sweeping changes, like Eric Musselman did by bringing in a half-dozen transfers at Nevada and Arkansas, Vanderbilt basketball will become what their football program has been for 6 decades. Only losing 9 games will keep this program from becoming the first in SEC history to lose 20 games four years in a row, and there is still a chance this one can go 4-21 or 5-20.
Vanderbilt ousted Bryce Drew because of an injury to the greatest player in program history. Darius Garland had the team at 4-0 with a Quadrant 1 road win plus another win over a team that would make the Big Dance that year. The Commodores had another top 10 recruiting class lined up for the next season with the opportunity to have the number one class this year with 3 5-stars and 1 4-star ready to commit. Additionally, Vanderbilt was Chet Holmgren’s initial leader in the clubhouse. Once Drew was dismissed, and Roger Powell went to Gonzaga, it was the Zags that got two of those 5-star players, and Holmgren might be headed there now. Meanwhile, this inept coaching staff signed a 2-star and a 1-star player. They inherited Pippen who chose to remain a recruit. They lost two key players that were coming until Drew was fired.
90% of coaching success rests in recruiting. This staff is the 1962 Mets of recruiting. The former staff was the 1927 Yankees of recruiting. It’s a no-brainer. Vanderbilt is now the worst basketball team in power 6 conference teams to match being the worst power 5 football program.
The SEC could make a lot more money with a Virginia Tech, West Virginia, or North Carolina State replacing Vanderbilt. Tennessee keeps the 2 million plus Nashville market, and the SEC picks up a large new market. WVU brings the Pittsburgh market into the equation.
Maybe Sarah Fuller plays basketball.
Now Stackhouse says that any Vandy fan that voted for Trump is a racist. That’s going to come back to haunt him. There are too many long-time supporters of the basketball program that will demand change to be made for this, and we’re talking about old-timers that believed Perry Wallace was more important to sports than Jackie Robinson.
Let’s see: When I was 9 years old, my father took me downtown to see the famous lunch counter sit-ins in support of equal rights for all. But, the bozo basketball coach says I am a racist. I will be withholding my annual
drat the new computer keyboard–annual donation to the school for non-athletic means until they dismiss bozo.
