Rapid Reaction: Vanderbilt battles, comes up short against Tennessee
Rapid reaction from Vanderbilt’s hard-fought loss to Tennessee:
What it means: The Commodores fought hard during the second half of the season, but an 0-8 SEC finish during Derek Mason’s first season was a disappointing start after James Franklin.
What I liked: Vanderbilt’s secondary saved one of its best performances of 2014 for its final game, intercepting Joshua Dobbs twice and giving up just 92 yards through the air. The Commodores nearly had two other interceptions and kept Tennessee’s offense, which had caught fire late in the year, at bay. Torren McGaster recorded both picks.
What I didn’t like: Special teams play, notably in the first half when the Commodores let Cam Sutton dance his way to a 76-yard punt return touchdown for the early 7-0 lead. Inconsistent early, Johnny McCrary was yanked for Patton Robinette in the second quarter after a poorly-thrown interception.
Who’s the man: Running back Ralph Webb ran hard between the tackles and managed a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that pulled Vanderbilt within seven. Sixteen carries for 55 yards wasn’t enough however thanks to several third-and-long situations limited his totes.
What’s next: One of two SEC teams staying home for the holidays without a bowl berth this season, Mason now looks at his staff and decides if any changes need to be made prior to next season.
