The Vanderbilt Commodores (1-5) fell 44-17 to the No. 13 Georgia Bulldogs in Athens. The Commodores have lost three straight since their 34-31 win over Massachusetts in Week 3 and continue to struggle in tough matchups.

Here are a couple of thoughts on the game:

What it means: No surprises here. The SEC’s worst team struggled on the road against a ranked opponent. Vanderbilt faced a highly overmatched Georgia team and the score reflected as much. The Commodores need to make improvements before competing with the contending programs of the SEC.

What I liked: Derek Mason focused on his running game. Ralph Webb had 77 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Jerron Seymour had 41 yards on nine carries.

The Commodores also continued to fight despite a large deficit. Vanderbilt scored most of its points in the second half, despite facing a 27-7 margin.

Who’s the man: Tood Gurley. What else is new? Gurley had yet another stellar performance, rushing for 163 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. Both of Gurley’s scores came in the first quarter, giving Georgia an early lead and momentum swing.

The junior also added a 50-yard pass to Jeb Blazevich in the second quarter that was crucial to an eventual touchdown drive, moving the Bulldogs ahead 27-7.

Key Play: Todd Gurley’s 5-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Georgia grabbed the early momentum and never looked back, adding 21 points before Vanderbilt found the end zone. Gurley’s first down pass was also a key play, answering the Commodores first touchdown and reclaiming momentum.

What’s next: Vanderbilt will host Charleston Southern in Nashville next weekend. The Buccaneers are 5-0 and are coming off a Week 6 bye.
