This season, college football teams are running into the problem of not having enough players available to play games. Vanderbilt came dangerously close to the availability threshold for Saturday’s game against South Carolina.

Robbie Weinstein of 247Sports reports that just 56 Commodores on scholarship are available to play against the Gamecocks. The SEC allows teams the option to declare “no contest” for a game if fewer than 53 players are available.

One of Vanderbilt’s absences is leading rusher Ja’Veon Marlow. Weinstein further reports that starting safety Dashaun Jerkins and starting defensive back Donovan Kaufman did not take the field during warmups.

Vanderbilt and South Carolina are set for a noon ET kickoff from Nashville with the game airing on the SEC Network. Both teams are looking to rebound from losses in Week 2.
