Survey shows Vanderbilt fans 'embarrassed' by football stadium
Vanderbilt has long been at the bottom of the SEC in terms of success on the football field.
According to a recent survey, the same goes for its stadium.
The Tennessean polled a portion of the Commodores fanbase, and the findings show an overwhelming majority of the 901 respondents are quite unhappy with Vanderbilt Stadium. Fans in the survey said they want the school to begin raising funds for stadium renovations — especially when it comes to seating — and will not resume attending games until that happens.
The Commodores averaged 31,341 in home-game attendance over seven games last year, a figure that has drastically dropped to 26,110 over four home games this season.
What do you think of the quality of Vanderbilt Stadium?
I think it will be hard to justify “expanding” the stadium when you are only putting 6,500 in the stands for your home games…
When you only have 9500 students attending the college, it is hard to get a legit student section. The biggest student section I have ever seen is when Vandy played Kansas State last year. Now they average about 400-500 students a game because the rest study, party, or just to Broadway. The attendance is really bad. Most of Vandy’s fans are really really elderly people who are either rich or attended the school. There isn’t much of a young crowd because academics are the tradition, not the school. I think the stadium sucks but it’s hard to argue that there isn’t a bad seat at all. However, if you build it, they will come.
No way that survey is real. There aren’t 900 Vandy fans in America.
Enrollment notwithstanding, Vandy alum & students support our athletics teams. Our baseball program is a national contender and Hawkins Field is one of the best venues anywhere. Memorial Gym is a classic basketball arena with tremendous history and charm. We pack it out regularly. winning cures many ills – sadly our football program doesn’t enjoy the same success as other SEC schools.
Regardless, I support upgrades to our stadium. Our student athletes, alumni and fans deserve a modern facility.
I admire Vanderbilt’s athletic programs.
I doubt there’s a lot of ‘duh’ comments said in the huddle.
They are a truly academic school playing in a conference where graduation rates are somewhere as important as making your bed.
I agree they need a new stadium.
Or they could take the Kentucky approach and down size the current one to make it appear more full.
And didn’t they have the ‘hanger’ downs to actually play Notre Dame this year?
Ain’t a lot of that going around in Lexington. We prefer to play as many MAC teams as we can. TWO of them open the season for us next year. And I think the third bunny, which will show our desire to take on only the best will be, wait, TENNESSEE-MARTIN!
