On Monday, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported that former NFL coach Jeff Fisher was a “potential target” to be the next Vanderbilt football coach. It didn’t take long for Vanderbilt AD Malcolm Turner to shoot down the report. Turner told student-run outlet The Vanderbilt Hustler on Tuesday that the Fisher report is a “completely false narrative” and that the athletic department is not conducting a coaching search.

Per Football Scoop, Rittenberg also named Notre Dame defensive coordinator Clark Lea, Tulane head coach Willie Fritz, Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott, Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo, Ole Miss defensive coordinator and former Colorado and San Jose State head coach Mike MacIntyre, and LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda as other potential candidates to replace Derek Mason. In his sixth season as Vanderbilt’s head coach, Mason is 26-43 overall. The Commodores are 2-5 this season heading into Week 10.

Mason appeared to be well-aware of the “hot seat” talk when he gave a fiery postgame interview after VU knocked off Missouri. That win, however, is looking a little less impressive with Mizzou falling to Kentucky in Week 9.

Mason’s Commodores play at South Carolina on Saturday night.
