Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia has played just one game for the Commodores, but he may have already endeared himself to the school’s beleaguered football fanbase.

Pavia was a big part of the Commodores’ 34-27 overtime win over Virginia Tech, going 12-of-16 for 190 yards and 2 touchdowns passing while adding a 3rd score on the ground — the eventual overtime winner — as part of a 26-carry, 104-yard afternoon.

Afterwards, Pavia had a priceless response to a comment he claimed to have been made by a Virginia Tech player in the buildup to the game.

“Some people from over there called me a poor man’s Trace McSorley. When you stop me, then you can talk,” Pavia said, according to VandySports’ Billy Derrick.

Pavia was a transfer portal acquisition from New Mexico State, where he threw for 2,973 yards and 26 touchdowns (versus just 9 interceptions) and ran for 923 yards and 7 scores in 2023. That included a 31-10 win over Auburn.

Now he’s in the SEC, and if his comments on Saturday are any indication, he’ll be an enjoyable watch.
