Vanderbilt keeps winning big games at home in football and basketball, the students keep storming whatever field of play it is, and the tab keeps growing for the unruly behavior.

The 2024-25 sports cycle has been a memorable one for Commodore fans, and we’re only in late January. Already, there have been 3 iconic moments in Nashville, with the football team getting the party started last fall in knocking off then-No. 1 Alabama, 40-35, on Oct. 5. The upset set off a wild celebration on campus and in the city, as one of the goalposts ended up in the nearby Cumberland River.

But the price of victory was high that October day at FirstBank Stadium. The fans stormed the field, and it cost the school $100,000 under the revised SEC policy that was adopted in 2023.

Then came basketball season and more Vanderbilt fans storming the fields of play, this time the court at Memorial Gym. Last Saturday, after a 76-75 upset of No. 6 Tennessee, Commodore fans stormed the court, and the second violation by the school for this cycle cost it $250,000.

They say things happen in threes, and so on Saturday, it was another Vanderbilt upset of an SEC sports powerhouse, another fan storming by the school’s rabid fans. This time, the basketball team knocked off No. 9 Kentucky, 74-69, setting off the latest wild celebration that will cost the school $500,000.

Could there be a fourth fan storming in Nashville during the 2024-25 cycle? Well, No. 1 Auburn comes to town on Feb. 11, and if the Commodores have a good shooting night, it could get wild again at Memorial Gym, and the price of euphoric victory could rise yet again.
